AiGameDev: @pmjordan True. That's more of a problem with the matchmaking systems IMHO... I played 70h+ of L4D with random people only.

  • 03:03:09 pm on April 19, 2010 |

AiGameDev: @logicalerror But I'm more on the replayable MP experience side of the fence personally. Haven't played the new episodes of HL2 even!

  • 02:57:58 pm on April 19, 2010 |

AiGameDev: @logicalerror I'm trying to stimulate some thoughts -- both in my own brain and around me. Black and White is good for that ;-)

  • 02:51:40 pm on April 19, 2010 |

AiGameDev: @bjoernknafla My point here implicitly is that it's not a "market choice" thing, but more of a business reality to face up to...

  • 02:49:50 pm on April 19, 2010 |

AiGameDev: @logicalerror Smaller players can't create experiences with high-production values, but instead simpler SP experiences like Mount & Blade.

  • 02:48:45 pm on April 19, 2010 |

AiGameDev: @logicalerror I look at it the other way around; the same trend behind social games on the rise is making long SP games less attractive.

  • 02:40:52 pm on April 19, 2010 |

AiGameDev: @logicalerror I like SP also, but business trends are forcing developers out of it incrementally...

  • 02:39:46 pm on April 19, 2010 |

AiGameDev: @bjoernknafla The obvious business problem with SP is piracy (loss of money) and lack of community (loss of money).

  • 02:38:31 pm on April 19, 2010 |

AiGameDev: @essell2 Hehe, do you honestly think 10 million copies were sold because of single player?

  • 02:34:29 pm on April 19, 2010 |

AiGameDev: Put another way, the next big business problem for industry is making better replayable MP/SP hybrid experiences. Valve is too. But HL3?

  • 02:26:30 pm on April 19, 2010 |

AiGameDev: @logicalerror It's not about what people want but trends driving the industry. Single player experiences are easy to pirate, among others.

  • 02:25:06 pm on April 19, 2010 |

AiGameDev: @codecow Uncharted 2 has awesome multiplayer though, and a big community. It was a big surprise to everyone at first!

  • 02:21:06 pm on April 19, 2010 |

AiGameDev: @photonstorm Is future technology enough to create momentum 3 months after release? Is the 3+ years of work on HL's SP content justified?

  • 02:16:29 pm on April 19, 2010 |

AiGameDev: What I'm getting at is that Valve needs to have some amazing multi-player in HL3, or incorporate that into the single player game itself.

  • 02:15:37 pm on April 19, 2010 |

AiGameDev: Of course, great single player experiences have their place & market. But they're making less and less business sense...

  • 02:14:38 pm on April 19, 2010 |

AiGameDev: @Larington It's a business decision. A finite single player experience costs money and doesn't capture attention like multiplayer games do.

  • 02:13:57 pm on April 19, 2010 |

AiGameDev: @photonstorm Yes I'd expect a strong story from HL3. But how can they make the game sustain itself like those large multiplayer communities?

  • 02:06:46 pm on April 19, 2010 |

AiGameDev: Physics puzzles just won't cut it compared to a dynamic replayable AI-driven cooperative experience. So what options do they have?

  • 02:05:40 pm on April 19, 2010 |

AiGameDev: The problem Valve has with Half-Life 3 is that Left4Dead made scripted single player finite experiences mostly obsolete in today's industry.

  • 10:24:51 am on April 19, 2010 |

AiGameDev: @LukeD Funny how they sell that conference via tourism mainly, hehe! Why else would you want to go to Simulated Evolution 2010? :-)

  • 07:42:26 pm on April 18, 2010 |

AiGameDev: @ivanassen You have to expect camcorders at any group demonstration these days. Anticipate and release your videos online at the same time!

  • 03:58:18 pm on April 18, 2010 |

AiGameDev: Looking forward to the interview with @nathansttt about the pathfinding in DRAGON AGE. (It starts in approximately 5h.)

  • 10:09:48 am on April 18, 2010 |

AiGameDev: @cliffski Or the opposite... If they have such a huge confidence in the game (expecting good reviews), then why make a mediocre demo?

  • 05:26:37 pm on April 17, 2010 |

AiGameDev: @slicedlime Don't worry, nobody will notice it from a distance and stop flights because of it!

  • 01:09:50 pm on April 17, 2010 |

AiGameDev: Me: "This next release of the AI Sandbox is looking very good." Petra: "I don't expect anything else!" (So all I can do is disappoint? :-)

  • 11:56:08 am on April 17, 2010 |

AiGameDev: Heh, this video http://patentabsurdity.com/ proudly claims to have been edited by Open Source software but it's the worst editing I've seen!

  • 10:38:38 am on April 17, 2010 |

AiGameDev: @aDevilInMe If you're not designing your games to be fundamentally pirate-proof, you're a few years behind. Zynga has *no* piracy AFAIK!

  • 12:23:50 am on April 17, 2010 |

AiGameDev: Kings of Convenience - What Walmart Tells Us About the Future of Gaming http://publications.dice.se/ (So, about those free demos FarmVille.)

  • 12:23:07 am on April 17, 2010 |

AiGameDev: Reading Cevat Yerli say "no free game demos" http://j.mp/bqjB1Y after watching Ben Cousins "Kings of Convenience" talk makes you think!

  • 04:06:43 pm on April 16, 2010 |

AiGameDev: @TonyAlbrecht @bjoernknafla If you need to parallelize your sort (too much data), aren't you doing something wrong already?
